Exploring the Most Attractive Study Abroad Destination in Europe.

In 2022, a staggering 1.66 million students from around the world, including EU and non-EU countries, pursued higher education across the European Union, according to Eurostat. As students seek quality education and better life opportunities, Europe continues to be a top choice for many.

Take Rim, for example. Born and raised in Lebanon, she is currently pursuing her master’s in management at Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) in Brussels. ‘The situation in my country wasn’t stable, so I wanted a chance for a more secure future and personal growth,’ said Rim, 26, who is also part-Austrian. Balancing her studies with two part-time jobs, she acknowledges the challenge of juggling work, education, health, and social life.

Like Rim, thousands of students choose Europe each year for various reasons. In 2022, Eurostat reported that 44% of international students were pursuing bachelor’s degrees, 45% were enrolled in master’s programs, and 9& were pursuing doctoral studies. Among the EU countries, Germany emerged as the most attractive destination, hosting 403,500 international students – accounting for a quarter of all foreign students studying in the EU. France and the Netherlands followed, drawing 16% and 10% of foreign students, respectively.

For some students, like Bia, a 25-year-old from Brazil pursuing a master’s in international relations at Jean Moulin Lyon 3 in France, studying abroad is about expanding cultural horizons. ‘France offers so much in terms of arts, museums, and cultural experiences – things I didn’t have access to in my small town back in Brazil,’ she shared, hoping to build a career in France after graduation.

Meanwhile, Lucrezia, a 24-year-old Italian, chose the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands for her bachelor’s in communication sciences, drawn by its academic excellence. ‘Compared to Italy, the Netherlands offers a more scientific and data-driven approach to social sciences,’ she explained, though she found housing expensive due to the country’s ongoing housing crisis.

While Luxembourg boasts the highest proportion of international students, with one in two students hailing from abroad, other EU countries like Italy, Spain, Croatia, and Greece see much smaller shares, with foreign students comprising just 3-4% of their total student populations.

When it comes to short-term study abroad programs, Spain reigns supreme among European students, offering a welcoming atmosphere, sunny weather, and a vibrant social scene. Laurent, a 29-year-old from Senegal, fondly recalled his Erasmus experience in Madrid, highlighting the country’s lively culture and friendliness.

As Europe continues to attract students from diverse regions, it stands out not just for its academic excellence but for the unique cultural experiences it offers. Whether it’s the academic rigor of Germany, the artistic richness of France, or the vibrant student life in Spain, Europe remains a top destination for those seeking to expand their horizons through education.
