STUDY OPPORTUNITIES IN THE UK FOR THIRD-CLASS AND HND HOLDERS.
No education is ever wasted, regardless of the grade, institution, or country of study. Every knowledge gained offers an advantage. For third-class and HND holders, one of these advantages is the opportunity to further their education in the UK.
Contrary to popular belief, third-class and HND holders can pursue higher education in the UK. They have access to Top-up programs, Pre-Master’s programs, Master’s degrees, and even direct Master’s programs, with a potential pathway to permanent residency.
However, it is important for students to be aware that universities in the UK have specific requirements and conditions for admission, which can vary by institution
Top-up Programs
Top-up programs are designed exclusively for HND holders, providing them with the opportunity to earn a Bachelor’s degree (BSc) in just one year. Unfortunately, this option is not available for third-class degree holders. Upon completion of a Top-up program, students are eligible to apply for a Master’s program, and an additional 2 years on a post-study work visa.
The most common fields available for Top-up programs are IT, Business, and Engineering. Completing a Top-up in the UK allows students to stay for up to 4 years; one year for the Top-up, one year for the Master’s program, and an additional 2 years on a post-study work visa.
This extended stay offers students ample time to secure employment, which could lead to staying in the UK longer. |after 5 years in the UK, students may be eligible to apply for permanent residency.
Pre-Master’s and Master’s Degrees
Third-class and HND holders can also pursue Pre-Master’s and Master’s degree programs in the UK. The duration of a Pre-Master’s program is determined by university admissions teams based on the student’s Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA). This program can last anywhere from 3 to 12 months.
A Pre-Master’s program allows students to take preparatory courses before advancing to a one-year Master’s program. Students are also eligible for a 2-year post-study work visa, giving them the opportunity to remain in the UK and explore job opportunities.
Direct Master’s Programs
For students with a third-class degree or HND, some universities offer the option of an extended (accelerated) Master’s program, typically lasting 15 months. However, direct Master’s options are more limited for these students, Most available programs are in business management, although a few universities may offer courses in health, IT, and engineering.
In most cases, universities require students with a third-class degree or HND to have relevant work experience before applying for a direct Master’s program. Without this experience, gaining admission can be challenging.
Like other postgraduate students, those pursuing a direct Master’s program can stay in the UK beyond their studies, provided they secure employment. This, too, can open doors to permanent residency.
